Biography of Jehan Ara: Pakistani Businesswomen, Entrepreneur -President of P@sha
Biography of Jehan Ara:
Childhood and Early Life in Hong Kong
Jehan Ara, one of Pakistan’s most influential women in
technology and entrepreneurship, was born in Karachi but spent most of her
childhood in Hong Kong, where her father worked as a banker. Raised in a
multicultural environment, she attended Rosaryhill School, where
she developed discipline, communication skills, and a deep curiosity for
creativity and technology. Her early exposure to international education and
urban innovation in Hong Kong shaped her worldview—instilling in her both
independence and a global perspective that would later define her leadership
style.
Early Career in Media and Advertising
After completing her college education, Jehan began her
professional journey in journalism, working for an English-language
newspaper in Hong Kong. However, she soon discovered a stronger interest
in advertising and communication strategy, where she excelled due
to her creative thinking and persuasive ability. Over the years, she climbed
the ranks to hold regional leadership roles at established
media organizations, including Headway Media Services in Hong Kong,
where she served as the Managing Director. Her work exposed her to
emerging concepts in digital marketing, public relations, and brand
storytelling—sectors that were rapidly transforming with the rise of global
connectivity.
International Experience and Transition to
Entrepreneurship
In the following years, Jehan relocated to the United
Arab Emirates, joining Gulf News in Dubai as part of its
advertising and communication team. Her work in the Gulf further strengthened
her understanding of international business and modern media ecosystems.
However, her father’s retirement in the mid-1990s prompted the family’s return
to Pakistan—a country then beginning to embrace digital technology.
Recognizing this shift, Jehan felt compelled to introduce innovative ideas from
her international experience to her home country’s developing media scene.
Return to Pakistan and Founding of Enabling Technologies
Upon her return in 1994, Jehan founded her first
company, Enabling Technologies, with the goal of integrating
multimedia and digital tools into Pakistan’s creative industry. At a time when
internet access was expensive and limited, her vision to merge creativity with
modern technology was both ambitious and ahead of its time. Jehan also explored
partnerships with multinational corporations like IBM, attempting
to introduce interactive digital experiences into corporate communication and
education. Though early adoption was slow, her determination and resilience
helped Enabling Technologies become one of the country’s pioneering multimedia
ventures, laying the groundwork for Pakistan’s future digital transformation.

Leadership at P@SHA: Elevating Pakistan’s Tech Sector
Jehan Ara’s career reached new heights when she joined
the Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA), eventually
becoming its President in 2007, a position she held for over two
decades. Under her leadership, P@SHA became a driving force behind Pakistan’s
software and IT services export sector. She advocated for policy
reforms, industry-academia collaboration, and youth engagement in
technology. Jehan established bridges between local tech companies and
international investors, amplifying the country’s presence in the global
digital economy.
Her tenure also saw Pakistan’s emergence as a recognized hub
for IT outsourcing, startups, and innovation. Jehan was instrumental in
ensuring that women in tech found visibility and support within the ecosystem—a
cause that became central to her mission.
The Nest IO: A Launchpad for Pakistani Startups
In January 2015, Jehan Ara launched The
Nest IO, a technology incubator and innovation hub in
Karachi, with support from Google for Startups. The Nest IO was
designed to guide early-stage entrepreneurs by giving them access to
mentorship, training, market exposure, and networking opportunities. Over the
years, it has played a pivotal role in nurturing more than 220 startups,
creating thousands of jobs, and transforming Pakistan’s innovation culture.
The Nest IO also introduced 021Disrupt (recently
rebranded as +92Disrupt), an annual entrepreneurship and innovation
conference that connects investors, founders, corporate leaders, and
students. By 2025, the event has become Pakistan’s most influential startup
gathering, with participation from top global VCs and regional technology
experts.
Katalyst Labs: Driving Innovation and Gender Inclusion
Building on her legacy of empowerment, Jehan founded Katalyst
Labs in 2021, a startup accelerator and women
leadership fellowship program designed to foster innovation,
inclusion, and diversity. Headquartered in Karachi, Katalyst Labs works across
sectors to mentor tech founders, develop leadership capacity, and promote
social entrepreneurship. The initiative continues to champion women-led
ventures while creating community-driven programs that bridge gaps between
business, technology, and impact-driven innovation.
Influence on Policy and National Development
Beyond entrepreneurship, Jehan Ara plays a vital advisory
role at the national policy level. She serves on the Prime
Minister’s Task Force on IT and Digital Economy and continues to
contribute to boards such as the Punjab Information Technology Board, Central
Depository Company, and IDEAS (International Defence Exhibition and
Seminar). Through these roles, she advocates for digital inclusion,
cybersecurity awareness, and policy frameworks that make technology accessible
to all citizens.
Jehan’s collaborations with international organizations,
including the World Bank and Women on Board Allies,
further strengthen her voice as an advocate for gender diversity and
responsible leadership in the corporate and tech sectors.
Recognition and Global Impact
Jehan Ara’s efforts have earned recognition both nationally
and internationally. In 2016, she was invited by U.S.
President Barack Obama to speak at the Global Entrepreneurship
Summit, where she represented Pakistan’s startup ecosystem on a global
stage. Her perspectives on innovation and women empowerment have since been
featured in global platforms including TEDx, UN forums,
and South Asian regional tech panels.
In 2023, Jehan was honored with the Tamgha-i-Imtiaz,
one of Pakistan’s highest civilian awards, acknowledging her contributions to
technology, gender advocacy, and entrepreneurship. Today in 2025, she continues
to lead as Founder & CEO of Katalyst Labs while remaining
a mentor to hundreds of Pakistani entrepreneurs and a voice for ethical
innovation.
