From Analyst to Angel: The Entrepreneurial Journey of Chris Adelsbach
Biography of Chris Adelsbach
Early Career & Founding Marlin
Chris Adelsbach began his professional journey with a decade
at GE Capital, where he honed his skills in finance and operations.
After that tenure, he co-founded Marlin Financial Group, a specialty
finance firm in the UK. Under his leadership, Marlin ranked among the
fastest-growing private companies in the country, featuring on the Sunday Times
Fast Track list for several consecutive years. In 2014, Marlin was acquired by
a NASDAQ-listed entity and a specialist buyout fund, marking Chris’s successful
exit from the business.
Transition to Venture Investing & Mentorship
Following the Marlin exit, Chris shifted focus toward
nurturing innovation. He became deeply involved in venture capital, angel
investing, and supporting startups. He took up an influential role at Techstars
Fintech Accelerator, where over five years he made about fifty first-check
investments into fintech startups like Everledger, Cuvva, Cutover, Shieldpay,
and Seldon.
Simultaneously, Chris built a large angel portfolio, backing
over 130 companies (many in fintech) such as Railsbank, Kuda Bank, Quant
Network, Marshmallow, Smart Pension, Monese, and Atom Bank. His
active investing and mentoring earned him recognition: he was honored as the UK
Business Angels Association’s “Angel Investor of the Year” in 2018/19, and
Sifted named him among the most active fintech angels in Europe.

Founding & Leading Outrun Ventures
In 2019, Chris co-founded Outrun Ventures (alongside
Tariq Khan), a vehicle that supports early-stage fintech, regtech, payments,
insurtech, and related sectors. Outrun invests primarily at the pre-seed and
seed stages. Chris and his co-investors use their own capital for
high-conviction bets and focus on being deeply value-added investors to their
portfolio founders.
Outrun’s model is designed to be “evergreen” — new
investments are funded by returns from prior successes. Chris has noted that
his private portfolio (around 200 companies) has attracted over £1.75
billion in follow-on capital. The 50 companies he backed during his time
running the Techstars fintech program have grown to more than 8× their
original valuation collectively.
Board & Advisory Roles
Chris serves as an advisor or board member to several
startups including Crowdz, Twig, Quant Network, and Railsr.
Through these roles, he provides strategic guidance and helps portfolio
companies tap into his network of VCs, industry leaders, and banks.
He is also a Venture Partner at Techstars London,
continuing his involvement in guiding fintech founders and startups through
early growth stages.
